History: Wiki link! The Original Generation Timeline is what I'll be basing my Sanger off.

AU History: Sanger is a Calderan native, who spent most of his adult life serving in the armed forces. He's been around a fair bit, reaching the rank of Major, and has been in a unit with Thorin Oakenshield and commanded Kyosuke Nanbu at various points in his career. Over time he has gained a reputation as a fierce and honourable warrior, more than ready to charge into battle armed with little more than a sword and guts.

Unfortunately, his career would be cut short by a failed mission in a battle against Gigas, where he held the line while his comrades retreated, and disappeared off the face of the planet, and was thought to be KIA. In reality, he was captured by Gigas forces, and was about to undergo Enhancement when resigned to his own fate, he miraculously Enlightened himself, stealing the prototype Colossal Blade and busting out before anything worse could happen to him.

He could have returned to Caldera, but between his shame at allowing himself to be captured, and a burning desire to discover the truth behind his Enlightenment, Sanger has chosen to stay in the wilderness, further honing his skills, a Beldum he found his only real companion. That's not likely to last however, as eventually there will be a need for him to return to civilisation as the Sword That Smites Evil. There's only so much one man can learn and do.

Canon Personality: Sanger Zonvolt is the self-styled Sword That Smites Evil, a warrior who fights sincerely for what he believes to be right and good, and always strives to do so in a just and honourable way. He has little tolerance for “evil,” and will happily cut it down wherever he sees it, especially if it comes from those who should be his allies.

He is, in many ways, a simple, straightforward man despite his eccentricities. He loves his friends, he loves children, and he wants to do good by them and the world at large, which he approaches in the most direct fashion possible, sophistry only serving to make him angrier. He is their sword and shield, cutting down all who threaten them.

His pursuit of the way of the sword has led him to adopt many mannerisms which can only be considered archaic, and he sits somewhere between the idealised versions of a knight and a samurai, even though his name suggests a German lineage and he was probably born on a space colony anyway. His chivalry is definitely the real deal, and he has a fondness for Japanese four character idioms, amongst other anachronisms.

It may lead him to seem gruff and unapproachable at first glance, but that is not necessarily the case. While he personally does not partake in many shenanigans or much revelry, (especially because he can't hold his drink,) he takes them with good humour, embracing the inherent silliness of the crew he has found himself flying with with a gentle smile. After all, Excellen was one of his subordinates, whilst his best friend has renamed himself the “Mysterious Gourmet” and thinks goggles and an updated wardrobe are a good disguise.

Sanger's style in battle can be summed up by one of his master's lines: “If the sword stays sheathed, then all is right with the world. If it must be drawn, then cut through them in a single blow.” He leads by example, charging ahead with his companions, and tries to destroy them as quickly as possible with almost comically large weapons. While he's perfectly capable of defending himself, he very much prefers simply cleaving through his targets before they become a problem.

He is fully aware of his own abilities, and is rarely humble about them. One of his catchphrases is him simply stating that “there is nothing he cannot cut,” typically said after destroying something that most would consider if not indestructible, at least extremely tough. One of his nickname for his personal machine is even the “War God's Armament,” the god of war in question being fairly obvious. His absolute faith in his own abilities is what allows him to charge into the thick of battle against eldritch gods and monsters, but at the same time it is also his greatest weakness, his pride causing him to take on challenges he ends up losing when he had other options on the table.

This pride also causes Sanger to place extraordinarily high standards on himself. He is the first to judge himself, and even committing a necessary evil is too much for him. However, even his deepest funks can be broken by a trusted companion reminding him of his true duty as the Sword That Smites Evil, even if he will never willingly take up a command position ever again.

To sum it up: Sanger is a badass German space samurai who is the Sword That Smites Evil.

AU Deviation: Sanger is a Calderan, instead of a space German. He fundamentally remains the same character, but he is still in the process of discovering himself as an Enlightened warrior, compared to the premier badass he is in canon. While he is unlikely to show it openly, Sanger constantly wonders why he was chosen, and why he was chosen when he needed it most. He suspects the name Enlightened might have a deeper meaning, tied to the person's spiritual state of being, and is now seeking it out. He is also still filled with a deep shame that he did not actually die in battle that fateful day, his warrior's code preferring death on the battlefield to the humiliation of defeat and the inevitable capture and torture that followed.

In many ways, he is still not quite the Sword That Smites Evil, who has nothing he cannot cut, but he's getting there, and as he has never betrayed his comrades, he may even still be willing to return to the Steel Battalion, although he is currently preoccupied with his own growth and journey with neither the time nor the inclination to lead or be led around.

Canon Abilities: Sanger is an expert swordsman who has what would be considered superhuman abilities in real life, with no problems swinging around a sword that can grow as large as he is. He's also one of the best giant robot pilots in the world, and currently pilots the Dynamic General Guardian Unit 1, better known as the Dygenguar.

He also makes the best dramatic entrances, and can bounce his pecs.

Enlightened Abilities: Sanger can only be a God of War, of the Steel/Fighting/Flying type.

As a swordsman, he carries the Colossal Blade around with him almost everywhere he goes, a one of a kind sword. At rest it is indistinguishable from an ordinary katana, but in the hands of Sanger Zonvolt, it has the ability to change shape and size at will. This mostly takes the form of an immense broadsword, the limits of its size growing with Sanger's own power.

His Enlightened abilities start and end around his swordsmanship, with their main focus being providing the incredible strength and power demanded by the Colossal Blade, with just enough forward speed and toughness for him to get in close with. In the beginning, he appears mostly human, albeit an incredibly buff one who wields a weapon no ordinary human could even begin to lift, with most simple slashing attacks of various types, using his sword instead of claws, as well as Swords Dance, Force Palm, and Brick Break.

Upon his first evolution, he gains his Steel type and gains bio-metallic armour especially around his arms, allowing him to charge into close range with a little more safety, and what can only be described as thrusters on his back, which while not especially useful for general mobility they ensure he can always get in your face no matter how far or how high you are. He starts using more high power moves, Meteor Mash in particular.

His second evolution, upon reaching at least level 55 and during a plot-relevant time, turns him into the Sword That Smites Evil. His armour and blade are now fully integrated into his body, capable of shifting between liquid and solid metal, granting him minor regeneration as the outer layers of his body shift around to fill in for damaged parts. The thrusters on his back grow larger, allowing him to soar through the air almost indefinitely, giving him the Flying type. More importantly, he grows to the peak of his power, obtaining his ultimate attack: Sacred Sword, proving once and for all there is no defence he cannot cut through.

Starter Pokémon: Gouwan the Beldum

Notes/Special Considerations:I really prefer Zankantou to Colossal Blade, but as nobody's discovered any open seas, a ship-slicing blade seems rather pointless.

SAMPLES

Third-Person: “Did somebody call for me?!” A clear voice cut through the battlefield, all sides of the melee turning to meet the steely gaze of the man who now stood atop a cliff, his silhouette broken up by the utterly massive blade he carried. There was only one person who had the audacity to interrupt a raging battle and carried such a ridiculous weapon, and that could only mean one thing: The cavalry has arrived.

He looked across the battle with clear, veteran eyes, locking onto the commander. All battlefield tactics could be narrowed down to the simple idea of taking out the chain of command as swiftly as possible, with as much prejudice as possible, and there was no-one more suited for that task than Sanger Zonvolt.

The swordsman leapt into the air with a shout, the distance between sword and target rapidly shrinking to nothing within a single bound. The Colossal Blade reforged itself, growing as large as Sanger himself, and almost as wide.

“Colossal Blade, Hurricane Thunderclap!” Declared the Sword That Smites Evil, and so it was to be, that the massive blade smashed into the ground, straight through what the enemy stood, the ground cracking beneath the force of Sanger's mighty blow. Surely nothing could survive that.

Q and A:
• You are alone and bereft of your Pokémon allies; upon what strengths do you rely on to see yourself safely home?
The Colossal Blade is the sword of my soul. As long as I have it, I can fight!

• What would you say is your greatest duty, and why?
I am the Sword That Smites Evil, the answer should be clear.

• What do you do to ensure we never again awaken the wrath of the gods upon humanity?
The will of the gods is known only to them. What I do know is that this blade protects the innocent, and if the fangs of the gods turn upon them, then...!

• No Enlightened chooses their abilities - and not all are Enlightened. What type abilities would you most desire to manifest and why?
I am a swordsman. All I need is to be able to swing my sword. I welcome any abilities that would allow me to get in close and cut my enemies in two.
